Auran Trainz Railroad Simulator first appeared late in 2001 and provided MSTS with a major challenge. Trainz was originally conceived as a model railroad simulator, but developed capabilities similar to MSTS by the time it hit the market. Because of its roots, Trainz offered a few things MSTS didn't, including the ability to operate more than one train at a time (both simulators can have other trains operating, but they are controlled by the activity or scenario script, not the user) and a choice of control (virtual model railroad power pack or realistic engine controls). Trainz is generally considered to offer easier methods of building routes than MSTS. Trainz shipped with a free copy of GMax for building 3D models, forcing Microsoft to match the offer (available by download from Microsoft). Trainz comes with a variety of trains and sample routes.

About half a year after the initial release of Trainz, Auran provided a major upgrade known as Service Pack 3 (SP3). It is available free to owners of the original version via download or CD-ROM from Auran. The download is huge -- something like 400MB -- and requesting the CD-ROM will incur a shipping charge. Most people feel it's best just to spring for the new UTC (Ultimate Trainz Collection) version. SP3 and everything thereafter is incompatible with pre-SP3. Auran's current version, TRS2006, was released in September 2005. It includes dynamic industries, among other things. You can load/unlaod passenger and freight cars. You can buy Trainz at most stores where software games are sold or direct from Auran via their website at http://www.auran.com/trainz/default.htm. The most complete source for Trainz forums, help, and free downloads is the Auran website. There is a wealth of commercial and free compatible routes and trains for Trainz. You will never get bored!
