Network Rail today released updated proposals for a series of potential modifications to the section of the railway line in South Devon that crosses cliffs and passes over the sea.

Views are also being sought from communities and residents as well as rail passengers who use the Southwestern Railroad as part of a second consultation that will run for 6 weeks until March 1, 2020 when ‘They seek to protect 1.8 km of railroad between the Parsons Tunnel, near Holcombe and Teignmouth.

The railway line is the only line that connects Cornwall and Devon to the rest of the country and the plans would see the railway realigned away from the cliffs.

The updated design means that most of the beach is retained as it only moves the railway away from the danger areas of the cliffs and maintains the existing railway line at Parsons Tunnel and Teignmouth.

In addition, a land path will also be created with the new improved coastal path with more than 1 km of new path.

The vulnerable section of the railway was closed for six weeks following a landslide in 2014 and needs better protection from falling cliffs during extreme weather conditions.

Detailed proposals are available online at www.networkrail.co.uk/SouthWestRRP

Starting today in Dawlish Warren, 11 consultation events will allow people to learn more about the plans.

What did the officials say?

Mike Gallop, Network Rail’s West Route Manager, said:

“We have listened to feedback from the first round of consultations and our updated plans will ensure a resilient rail line for the entire Southwest while maintaining most of the beach and adding walking and walking facilities. improved recreation.

“The railway is a vital artery to the South West, on which communities, businesses and visitors to the region depend to connect with the rest of the UK. We welcome opinions on our updated proposals prior to seeking permission to proceed with work.
