A steam locomotive will run from Leeming to Leyburn at Christmas

Five blacks.

A steam locomotive is expected to run on the Wensleydale Railway this Christmas with the restart of services to Leyburn.

The engine, Black Five, will carry 42,000 people during the holiday season for the popular Polar Express rides, which are already full.

The locomotive will also carry two meat pie specialties between Christmas and New Years on December 27-28, with another diesel meat pie special (Class 14 # D9523) on December 29.

The Wensleydale Railway will operate diesel trains between Leeming Bar, Bedale and Leyburn stations on all three days.

An additional day of diesel operation (Class 37 # 37250) will be operated between Leeming Bar and Agent Burton on December 24.

Tickets can be booked in advance by calling the office on 01677 425805 or by booking through the website at www.wensleydale-railway.co.uk

Chris Williams, General Manager of Wensleydale Railway, said: “After an extremely difficult eighteen months and having had to cancel our services last Christmas, we are delighted to welcome a Black Five to the railway.

“Not only will the engine run throughout the sold-out Polar Express Train Ride events, it will also run for two days between Christmas and New Years.

“This is the first time that a Black Five has visited us here in Wensleydale and we anticipate it will be an extremely popular event.”
