The inaugural Sydney Swans AFLW squad met for the first time on Monday night as their pre-season got underway ahead of the AFLW season which kicks off at the end of August.
It was a historic occasion for the club to welcome the women’s team on their first official day and the players quickly settled into the Sydney Swans headquarters.
Before the first session on Tramway Oval, the players had their first team meeting and their official welcome to the club. After a welcome to the country by Jarred Hodges, the club’s Director of Indigenous Player Development, they were addressed by AFLW Head Coach Scott Gowans, AFLW Chief Executive – Sydney CEO Kate Mahony Swans – Tom Harley and General Manager of the Men’s Program – Charlie Gardiner alongside other AFLW staff.
On the track, a 2km time trial was the first item on the agenda with former national 400m hurdles athlete Montana Beruldsen showing her athletic ability to take first place in the event. Behind her, former Western Bulldogs player Brooke Lochland and former GIANT Lisa Steane finished third.
The team then took part in basic skills drills which allowed them to familiarize themselves with the first pre-season session and get to know each other as they began their journey as the Sydney Swans AFLW first team.
