Bauer Technologies Wins Midlands Underground Soil Improvement Contract

Bauer Group subsidiary Bauer Technologies will work on ground improvements to minimize settlements under a planned tram junction on the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill Underground Extension project.

The 11km extension will branch off the existing West Midlands Underground line, just east of Wednesbury Great Western Street underground stop, before passing through Tipton and Dudley.

The project is being delivered by Midland Metro Alliance, who are designing and building a number of metro extensions on behalf of Transport for West Midlands.

The project will see the new tramway line raised by 6m to meet the level of the existing track.

Bauer Technologies, which was awarded the contract by MPB Structures, will stabilize the historic granular and cohesive backfill material to minimize settlement under the planned access ramp at Delta Junction.

The soil improvement will be installed using 2000mm diameter soil mixing columns using a BG45 piling rig and associated grout mixing plant.

Bauer Technologies Managing Director Michael Jones said, “Bauer Technologies is pleased to be involved in this project, which combines both ground improvement and piling work. Having all available techniques under one roof means fewer interfaces for our client and allows us to focus on the right approach for the job.

Bauer began work on the site in December 2021 and is expected to complete work by spring 2022.
