Call to support local heritage railways on Yorkshire Day

Three of our local heritage rail organizations are using Yorkshire Day (August 1) to ask the public for their support after a series of financial challenges.

As well as the current wave of strikes affecting the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) which uses part of the national rail network, the prolonged dry weather has caused an outbreak of lineside fires, severely disrupting rail timetables.

The NYMR (North Yorkshire Moors Railway), Yorkshire Wolds Railway and National Railway Museum in York have joined forces with over 75 other heritage railway organizations across the UK for the second annual “Love Your Railroad” national campaign.

It highlights heritage rail organizations and encourages visitors to buy tickets to support them this summer.

The campaign covers six weekly themes which aim to raise awareness of the importance of heritage railways as tourist destinations, educate and tell the story of Britain’s railways whilst providing local jobs and volunteer community engagement.

The campaign also aims to highlight how NYMR benefited from the £10 million Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey (YMJ) project, supported by funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and was designed to transform the railway and secure its future.

Chris Price, Managing Director of NYMR, said: “Our message for Yorkshire Day is ‘support your local heritage railway’; After surviving the COVID pandemic, we are now facing new challenges that strongly impact our schedules, the number of visitors and therefore our income.

“Summer holidays are our busiest time of year, so it’s been a real challenge to keep our service levels high in the face of strikes and fires – but our team have been fantastic and kept us going. on the right track.”

NYMR and its other heritage railways across the UK carry over 13 million passengers each year, over 560 miles of rail line and contribute £400 million in economic impact.

22,000 volunteers and over 4,000 paid staff keep UK’s heritage railways on track, highlighting the important role the railways played during the Industrial Revolution.
