THE Severn Valley Railway has launched a competition to find a temporary new name for one of its heritage locomotives in honor of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next year.
People are encouraged to suggest names for the steamboat so that a shortlist can be selected by the railway and put to a public vote.
Michael Dunn, Visitor Experience Manager, said: “What we’re looking for is something that sums up the best of English.”
âNot only will the Railroad proudly celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next year, but a few miles away Birmingham 2022 will see the Midlands highlighted as the site of the Commonwealth Games. One thing is certain, 2022 is going to be a very special year.
The celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne will take place next year, focusing on a special four-day holiday from Thursday June 2 to Sunday June 5.
The 2022 Commonwealth Games take place from July 28 to August 8, with more than 5,000 athletes from 72 nations.
âEntering our competition is easy,â added Michael.
âJust go to svr.co.uk and enter your details by the February 7th closing date. We ask for entries with a maximum of 13 characters to fit on the new nameplates. At this point, we’re not revealing which of our locomotives are going to be renamed, so expect more exciting announcements in the months to come.
After preselection and public voting, the winning name will be inscribed on authentic nameplates and attached to the locomotive.
The winner of the competition will receive a VIP invitation to the christening ceremony.
