CARLISLE’s beloved miniature railway line is back on track for the first time since 2019, much to the delight of the local community.
The club, which was established in 1936, was proud to welcome the return of locomotives to the beautiful sites of Hammond’s Pond on Sunday (June 5) after Covid-19 withdrew service from the tracks.
Model Engineering Society of Carlisle president Stephanie Saville said it was a “beautiful” return of an important aspect of the park.
“Everything went according to plan on Sunday, and we raced all afternoon, it was a beautiful day and we had around 250 passengers on board,” she said.
The triumphant return saw three locomotives running that day, bringing back some old faces as well as new ones.
“It was all kids, it was nice to see, they were really excited and we got a lot of really positive feedback from the day as well.
“Again, we would really like to thank everyone for coming – there were so many new faces thanks to Facebook, it made a huge difference,” she said.
Stephanie said they were also happy to host Councilor and Deputy Mayor of Carlisle Colin Glover that day.
Ahead of the unveiling, Cllr Colin Glover said: “It’s been a part of the park for decades and I know people are eagerly waiting for the railway to get back in motion.
“The railway is generally a very important part of Carlisle’s history and the presence of volunteer model engineers who have been part of the community has made it a fantastic addition to the park.
“Next year is the centenary year of the park and it would be fantastic to be able to celebrate this anniversary with all aspects of the park and the railway is a very important part of it,” he said.
The club will run until October and you can come any Thursday to chat with fans or Sunday afternoons between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. for a spin on the line.
Anyone interested in the railway line should keep an eye on the Carlisle Hammonds Pond Railway Facebook page for special events and announcements as they prepare for an exciting year ahead.
