John Cameron to Host Culinary Experiences in Bury with Steam Locomotive No. 60009 Union of South Africa

A series of evening dining events have been added to the East Lancashire Railway calendar, set to be hosted by 60009 Union of South Africa owner John Cameron.

Events will take place at the Bury Transport Museum and fundraising evenings will include a three-course meal.

The evening’s menu will include South African puff pastry bites to start, followed by Cape Malay-influenced coconut chicken with yellow rice. The meal will end with a drunken Cape pie with fresh cream, dates, pecans and brandy for dessert.

John Cameron will then end the evening with a question-and-answer session.

Union of South Africa has found a home at the Bury Transport Musuem after being withdrawn from service.

Tickets cost £60 per person, with proceeds going to the ELR’s Buckley Wells Project.

The special evenings will take place on August 12, September 9 and October 14, 2022.

ELR President Mike Kelly said: “We have enjoyed seeing and riding behind this icon of the rails for many years. Now, we’re thrilled to offer this opportunity for our visitors to get a glimpse into the legend of steam, by talking to the man who’s been running it for over 50 years.

“It really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and we look forward to welcoming guests into the museum – to visit the exhibits during the day, but also to attend our exclusive evenings with John Cameron. All funds raised will go towards improvements to our Buckley Wells Rail Depot.

John Cameron adds: “I’m really looking forward to meeting local rail enthusiasts and sharing my experience with the Union of South Africa, and also telling them about my experience in the magical world of British steam. There is so much more to do than see the locomotives, which is why we wanted to host these nights – to allow guests to fully immerse themselves in the magic of steam legends.
