Largs railway line to reopen after landslide repairs are completed

This Saturday (March 27) the railway line between West Kilbride and Largs will reopen after repair work on a steep slope next to the tracks.

The railway line has been closed since February 5 when a landslide blocked the line near Fairlie.

Heavy rains dropped more than 7,000 tonnes of debris on the tracks.

While the line was closed for repair, a rail replacement bus service operated between Ardrossan South Beach and Largs.

The slope was rebuilt with the help of specialist diggers who moved over 27,000 tonnes of stone to help strengthen the area along the 100m stretch.

The reconstruction is complete and new tracks have been laid. The line will reopen once repairs to signaling and overhead lines are completed.

Liam Sumpter, Route Manager for Network Rail Scotland, said: “Our engineers have been working as quickly as possible to complete these repairs and get services back in motion for customers.

“It was a difficult and complex project, with thousands of tons of material needing to be removed before we could begin to assess the damage to the line and make our repairs. “

“We appreciate the inconvenience that the closure of the railway has caused to passengers and our line neighbors, and thank them for their understanding during the salvage work.”

David Simpson, ScotRail COO, said: “It’s been a tough time for customers and we’ve done everything we can to keep them on the move, with replacement buses helping those making essential trips while these are on the move. vital repairs were being carried out. “

“Our colleagues at Network Rail worked hard to get services back to normal, and we worked closely with them to ensure that the line was reopened as quickly and safely as possible.”
