COIMBATORE: Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) officials have had to cut short the trial run of the new HSD oil-fired steam locomotive following an oil leak. According to sources, the trial run of the four-coach coupled locomotive started in Mettupalayam at 11 a.m. on Monday. When he reached Addderly, at 12.30 p.m., authorities detected an oil leak and decided not to complete the trial until Coonoor. He returned to Mettupalayam at 2 p.m.

An official said: “We operated the HSD oil-fired steam locomotive at a speed of 30 km/h like the regular service. We noticed a slight drag and an oil leak. After the restoration of these faults, we will carry out a test at the earliest. We will run the train at 30 km/h to Kallar and from there we will maintain 13 km/h to Coonoor. From Coonoor, we will restore the speed to 30 km/h until Udagamandalam. The locomotive is rack and pinion and there should be no problem running it at 30kph to Coonoor.

The meter gauge locomotive, X-37401, is the first high-speed diesel oil-fired (HSD) steam locomotive manufactured in the country, at the Golden Rock workshop in Tiruchy. It has two oil tanks – the main tank can hold 1,600 liters and the rear tank can hold 725 liters.
