Joy as the steam locomotive returns to the Llangollen railway

LLANGOLLEN Railroad volunteers celebrated the arrival of the first steam train of the 2021 season in Carrog.

Great Western Railway Heavy Freight Locomotive 3802 departed at 10:30 am from Llangollen and was the first such steam train since October on the Dee Valley Line.

Despite the wet weather, good numbers boarded the train to run behind the 3802. There was an air of enthusiasm from the volunteers gathered as the steam returned to the tracks, and members of the public were excited to join the extended drive to Carrog.

The heritage Wickham railcar completed the steam train offering 75-minute weekend service.

The certification of the locomotive was completed to the satisfaction of the ORR (Office des Chemins de Fer et des Routes) thanks to the hard work of Service Motive members who had prepared No.3802 for its return to steam.

For the crews on the platform, it was a day of reassessing their skills to drive and fire the engine after a ten-month hiatus in operations.

For the first trip, Martin Fuller was the driver accompanied by firefighter Steph Ellwood.

LRT Chairman Peter Edwards said: “The resumption of a steam transport service in Llangollen this weekend is the culmination of a huge effort on the part of our volunteers and our small staff. . This is an important step in our return to full operation.

“We cannot afford to be complacent, however, we depend on the continued support of the Welsh government and we still have challenges to overcome if we are to bring the railway back to stability and profitability.”

Rail services have been gradually reintroduced to the railroad since July, when an interim service with the heritage diesel wagon initially operated to Berwyn.

These were then extended to Glyndyfrdwy when the engineering work was completed.

The heritage diesel service proved popular with visitors wishing to access walking areas in the Dee Valley and the revenue generated from the tickets usefully contributed to the overhead costs of the railway, pending the return of the train to steam.

Steam trains will run on weekends and holidays, with diesel railcars running Tuesday through Friday in August.

A series of fabulous events will take place in the second half of August, as guest star LMS Jubilee 45596 Bahamas class locomotive arrives in the valley.

On the weekend of August 21-22 and the holiday weekend of 28-29-30, the Bahamas will carry passenger trains, including one of the popular Jolly Fisherman dining trains on Saturdays. A shuttle service will also be in operation during events.

Flying Scotsman 2021: Where to see a historic locomotive in the South this fall

The iconic Flying Scotsman steam locomotive will once again cross southern England in September.

Although tickets for future trips are sold out, many will be delighted at the sight of the Flying Scotsman, described as the most famous steam locomotive in the world.

Some Surrey residents may have taken the train already this year or seen it in all its glory when it traveled to Surrey Hills from London Victoria in May.

Currently traveling to Yorkshire, as Chronicle Live reports, the train will pass through Lancashire next week before returning again on Tuesday 21 September.

On this day, the train, which is owned by the National Railway Museum, will travel to Salisbury from London Victoria.

A steam locomotive will visit Carlisle on Tuesday

A Carnforth Pool steam locomotive will return to the mainline and will be in and around Carlisle on Tuesday, August 24, 2021.

The locomotive pulls the Dalesman. The tour sees the steam locomotive pass through Ribblehead en route to Carlisle.

The train, pulled by a diesel locomotive, will leave Chester at around 7:35 a.m.

The tour will stop at Frodsham at around 7.49am for a 4 minute break, departing at 07.53am. The diesel locomotive will then stop at Warrington Bank Quay (8:05 am), Wigan North Western (8:28 am) and Leyland (8:48 am) and Preston (9:05 am) to pick up passengers.

The tour then reverses and heads to Blackburn (9:41 am), Clitheroe (10:10 am) and Hellifield at 10:31 am, where the steam locomotive joins the train.

From Hellifield, the steam train passes through Horton at Ribblesdale (11:17 am), Ribblehead (11:24 am), Garsdale (11:38 am), Appleby (12:00 pm) and Carlisle at 12:52 pm.

On the way back, the steam locomotive will leave Carlisle at 3:20 p.m. before passing through Penrith North Lakes (4:10 p.m.), Tebay (4:50 p.m.), Oxenholme Lake District (5:03 p.m.) and Carnforth South Junction at 5:47 p.m. , where the steam locomotive got off the train.

The diesels take over from the steam and will pass through Preston (6:56 p.m.), Leyland (7:10 p.m.), Wigan North Western (7:36 p.m.), Warrington Bank Quay (7:49 p.m.), Frodsham (8:05 p.m.) and Chester at 8:30 p.m.

Wabtec delivers overhaul of locomotive no.1000

Wabtec celebrated on August 6 the modernization of its 1,000th locomotive in North and South America with the delivery to Norfolk Southern (NS) of the AC44C6M 4463, a rebuilt 1998 vintage GE Dash-9.

Wabtec’s modernization program covers the replacement of control systems to transform DC traction units into AC units. The transformation of the 4463 into the AC44C6M – a joint effort of engineering teams from Wabtec and NS – involved a complete rebuild of the unit’s 7FDL igniter to EPA Tier 1 Plus emissions standards, upgrading the engine control system and installation of Trip Optimizer SmartHPT and LOCOTROL® eXpanded Architecture (XA) Distributed Power (DP).

Trip Optimizer SmartHPT “allows additional fuel savings by optimizing train performance for a given HPT (Horse Power Per Ton) target,” notes Wabtec. “It is EPA certified for 5% fuel and emissions savings. Auto idle identifies areas where the train has more power than needed and automatically idles the tail units in the front group, saving additional fuel. The Smart Planner option provides a railway with the ability to limit a train’s HPT by developing a limited power plan based on a customer-defined HPT limit for the train and route. The Network Control option automatically isolates the locomotives from the lead group using eMU / Interconsist routing. Isolated units will then follow their specific railway rules for closure. “

Wabtec describes LOCOTROL® XA as the “next generation DP platform”, offering benefits such as reduced DP communication losses and support for future applications such as Road RCL and digital messages on THE METEORCOMM® ITCM® (Interoperable Train Control Messaging®) network.

ITCM®, part of the METEORCOMM® Interoperable Train Control network® (ITCnet®), is “an advanced, custom, middleware messaging system for the rail industry that supports seamless communication between multiple organizations across tens of thousands of remote endpoints,” the company notes. “It allows the back office and the railways to exchange messages regardless of their physical location or type of connectivity. It is currently used by Class I, short haul and commuter railways, system integrators, and positive train control (PTC) accommodation providers across the country. This system supports PTC by coupling state-of-the-art hardware with advanced software to enable highly reliable interoperable train control communication. “

Reconstruction in AC44C6M gives “up to 25% improvement in energy efficiency; more than 40% increase in reliability; up to 55% increase in tractive effort; and up to 20% reduction in maintenance, repair and overhaul expenses, ”Wabtec reports. “The fuel efficiency benefits of these 1,000 locomotives have reduced carbon emissions by more than 1.4 million tonnes since 2015. This reduction is equivalent to removing emissions from 340,000 cars. “

NS represents 500 of the 1,000 locomotives that Wabtec has modernized. Each rebuild of the NS fleet reduces more than 500 tonnes of carbon emissions per year, according to Wabtec.

The retrofit program also reduces emissions by reusing existing steel on the locomotive through a requalification and refurbishment process. “More than half of the critical components of a locomotive are reused, rebuilt or remanufactured at least three times during their useful life,” explains Wabtec. The company’s locomotive factories in Erie, Pennsylvania; Fort Worth, Texas; and Contagem in Brazil reused more than 100,000 tonnes of steel to modernize the 1,000 locomotives.

“Our partnership with Wabtec is one of the ways we plan to meet our target of 42% reduction in emissions intensity by 2034,” says Tom Schnautz, vice president of NS-Advanced Train Control . “The Wabtec program maximizes the value of our locomotives, reduces operating costs and reduces emissions. The Stanier Mogul Fund has published its latest update on the overhaul of its steam locomotive, London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Stanier Class 5 (2-6-0) ‘Stanier Mogul’ No.13268, at the Severn Valley Railway.


In recent weeks, the team has focused on the engine’s two outer cylinders.

First, the team redesigned the left cylinder piston, using thin strips of steel to help guide the piston into position.

Then the studs used to secure the front cylinder covers were screwed into place. This involves cleaning each hole to make sure the studs screw on smoothly.

Once the studs are in, the front cylinder covers could be temporarily installed using four bolts, which can allow the team to properly adjust the valves.

Finally, the pipes of the copper drain valves were cleaned and roughly polished.

Valve gear

Starting from the right side, the extension link is mounted and moves freely. A minor issue was noted, with the alignment between the union link and the combined quarter inch lever. To help understand why the alignment is incorrect, the union link has been installed.

Smoke box

Drilling and adding countersunk holes on the new smoke box license plate is complete.

The superheater head is being prepared for crack detection and hydraulic testing. On the smoke box, many parts are ready to be assembled, including the liner for the bottom of the smoke box, the upper half of the steel ring that secures the smoke box to the boiler barrel and the liner. from the smoke box door.

Keighley and Worth Valley Railway announce second visiting diesel locomotive

The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway has announced that it will welcome BR Class 27, No. 27001, to the railroad for its upcoming diesel and mixed traffic gala.

Courtesy of Class 27 Locomotive Group and the Scottish Railway Preservation Society (SRPS), 27001 will join the previously announced Class 26 No. 26007 for their first gala since the Spring Steam Gala in 2020.

It is believed that this is the first time that 26007 and 27001 have been kept together, which means that the prototypes of the 26 and 27 classes will come together.

Both 26007 and 27001 were built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company, 27001 being a further development of 26007. 27001 entered service in 1961 as number D5347.

The Class 26 and 27 will join the diesels of the domestic fleet of BR Class 20 No. 20031, BR Class 37 No. 37075, EE Prototype D0226 ‘Vulcan’, Hudswell Clarke Shunter D2511 and Hunslet No. 32 ‘Huskisson’.

BR Standard 2 Steam Locomotive Fleet # 78022, USATC S160 # 5820 ‘Big Jim’, Ex-LMS Ivatt # 41241, MR 4F # 43924 (subject to boiler extension) will join also at the party. ), and appearing for her first Passionate Gala, L&Y No. 957 ‘The Green Dragon’.

The Saint steam locomotive to attend the North Yorkshire Moors Railway gala

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has announced that GWR Saint No. 2999 Lady of Legend will join their annual Steam Gala celebrations.

Running from Thursday 23 to Sunday 26 September, the event will see an intensive schedule in operation with all available steam locomotives.

History of 2999 Lady of Legend

A prototype Saint was built in 1902 and was used for stopping and express passenger services on the Great Western. They formed the basis of the Hall class during the reconstruction of 2925 St Martin in 1924. They lasted until 1951 when the class was withdrawn. Fast forward to the 21st century – the Didcot Railway Center began new locomotive construction in 2009, and the completed 2999 entered passenger service in 2019.
