Cases of road accidents at Kampala level crossings have increased in recent years.
The Department of Public Works has been under pressure to take action to remedy the situation to no avail.
Public lighting at level crossings has been shown to reduce nighttime collisions between vehicles and trains.
In modern countries, railways set up manual and electric crossing barriers to block road traffic from the railway tracks.
Although clear and simple signage may suffice for level crossings in sparsely populated areas, intersections with heavy traffic today often have active warning systems, which include electric gates, flashing lights and warning bells that go off when an approaching train stumbles onto a nearby track. circuit.
It is understood the couple were retiring after hanging out at a nightclub in the city. The Uganda Railways Corporation said the incident happened at 3:33 a.m.
“Today at 03:30, an accident involving our locomotive and a sedan occurred in Nakawa. The incident is being investigated by @PoliceUg and our greatest cooperation is guaranteed,” URC tweeted Sunday morning.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims of this unfortunate incident. We are also committed to ensuring the safety of all road users who interact with our trains. »
How to avoid accidents at level crossings
Drivers are always advised to slow down when approaching a level crossing. Trains can arrive at any time from any direction and it takes a long time for a train to stop.
Never drive around, under or through a railroad gate when it is lowered, lowered or raised. It is illegal and dangerous. If your vehicle stalls on the tracks, evacuate the vehicle immediately. Do not stop in the middle of the tracks.
Concentrate – it’s easy to get distracted, especially by phones, music and conversations. Never run a train to a level crossing. Avoid changing gears while crossing the tracks.
