Severn Valley Railway appeals to restore locomotive stock

The Severn Valley Railway (SVR) has launched a major appeal for £500,000 to restore its locomotive fleet at Bridgnorth – vital to the operation of the whole railway.

The SVR says the yard, which is used daily for the servicing and maintenance of steam locomotives, is in desperate need of repairs.

Martin White, Head of Engineering, said: “The current track was laid in the 1970s using second-hand materials and, with careful care, has lasted 50 years, which was much longer. longer than expected.”

“However, the end of its life is fast approaching. The track works and points wear out quickly and the drainage through the yard is clogged, accelerating the deterioration of the sleepers. If the track works deteriorate much further, the locomotives will not be able to enter the works for maintenance or have access to water, coal and the facilities used daily for the preparation of the locomotives. This would have a significant impact on our ability to manage the services.”

SVR volunteers with lifelong track expertise have developed an effective solution and are ready to oversee the work, with the same dedication, care and professionalism that has enabled several other major restoration projects across the railway. One of them, Falling Sands Viaduct, was made possible thanks to the support of generous donors.

Each donation will help ensure that the locomotives that depend on the yard can continue to operate.

Those who donate £100 or more will receive a special edition of the official SVR 2022 season poster as a thank you. The poster features 4930 Hagley Hall, a popular locomotive returning to steam in 2022 after 36 years. Hagley Hall will be a regular visitor to the rail yard.
