“To minimize disruption to your journey,” it is taking place overnight, where limited train service will operate, Southern said.

Southern Rail said colleagues at Network Rail had discovered a fault in a set of points – moving sections of track – “which need to be repaired”.

A spokesperson added: “Colleagues at Network Rail have discovered an urgent fault on a set of points which need to be repaired.

“It’s better to do it sooner rather than later, and while there’s never really a perfect time to shut down the line, fewer people are using the network overnight.”

From around 00:30, Southern and Thameslink trains to and from Brighton will be changed.

Southern said most trains will run non-stop between Brighton and Haywards Heath via Lewes.

After 00:37 on Sunday, buses will replace trains between Haywards Heath and Brighton.

The spokesperson added: “Please check your itinerary before you go as it may take longer than usual to reach your destination. You may need to use an alternative bus service for part of your journey. .”

From approximately 12:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., Wivelsfield, Burgess Hill, Hassocks and Preston Park will have no train service.

Southern said staff were continuing to work with suppliers to “procure additional rail replacement buses.”
