Train enthusiasts, history buffs and people of all ages are invited to come aboard and explore the glorious days of local and long-distance travel on America’s railroads during Arizona Rail Day in Chandler. The celebration takes place Saturday, February 26, 2022 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Arizona Railway Museum, 330 E. Ryan Road. The free public event is held annually by volunteers from the museum, located in the southwest corner of Chandler’s Tumbleweed Park.

Arizona Railway Day will include exhibits of artifacts and memorabilia, tours of vintage railcars, and a great sale of books, magazines, and railroad schedules at very affordable prices. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Visitors will learn about the historical significance of the railways from museum volunteers who will explain the type of work required to restore and refurbish these carriages to keep them ‘alive’, a testament to the glory days of passenger rail travel . Several cars feature interior displays of typical accommodations for the traveling public, including seating, sleeping and dining areas, with bespoke railroad dining car china.

The museum’s diesel locomotive will be open, giving visitors a chance to blow the horn, and Chandler’s historic steam locomotive #2562 will also be on display. Outdoor exhibits will include a wide variety of railway signs, signals and mining equipment.

Standard museum admission is waived for Arizona Railroad Day. However, donations from the public and local businesses are greatly appreciated. Visitors should access the event on Ryan Road, from Arizona Avenue or McQueen Road. Parking is free. Although the exhibit building and restrooms are ADA compliant, due to the historic nature of the equipment, access to the cars is not ADA compliant.
