Starting Sunday, October 3, embark on a leisurely sightseeing tour by locomotive in the beautiful Hocking Hills region. The rides – on a train “made up of historic equipment from 1917 to the 1960s” – runs from Thursday to Sunday in October.

According to a statement from the railway, trains depart from Nelsonville depot at noon and 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and at 1 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays for a round trip to East Logan. Some train cars will be heated, depending on the weather, but there are also open-top cars to fully enjoy the fall.

The trip takes approximately 2 hours and tickets cost $ 18 for adults, $ 13 for children, and $ 16 for seniors and military personnel.

Another event that the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway hosts in October is the Starbrick BBQ & Brew Steam Express Trains. They say this train will be pulled by the 0-6-0 steam locomotive built by Baldwin in 1920, which lay unused for 60 years before Hocking Railway volunteers fixed it. This is a 2 hour event scheduled for October 29. Tickets start at $ 55.

The last event in October is naturally a Halloween party, the Trunk-or-Treat Train. The railroad says the trip is about two hours round trip and crosses the grim valley of the Hocking River. Treats are available and costumes are encouraged. The train leaves the Nelsonville depot at 6 p.m.

There’s also an option later in the year for the Elegant Dinner Train, which the railroad says is a 3-hour round trip through Southeast Ohio’s backcountry. Each train will have a different dining theme with a four-course meal. The trip is scheduled for November 20. Reservations will be available from October 18. Prices start at $ 75.

Hocking Valley Scenic Railway is located at 33 W. Canal St., Nelsonville, Ohio. Visit for more information.
