Two dead after being struck by a locomotive near Coimbatore


Two young people were killed after being struck by a high-speed locomotive in Nallampalayam near Coimbatore on Saturday evening.

Government Railway Police (GRP) said that D. Manikandan (17) from RS Nagar and S. Vijay Krishnan (18) from Kamaraj Nagar in Kavundampalayam were killed, while their friend R. Srikanth (18 years) got away with minor injuries.

Police said the youth went to an unused well in Nallampalayam on Saturday evening to catch pigeons.

The accident happened around 9 p.m. while they were on the Nallampalayam railway bridge. Manikandan and Vijay Krishnan were watching a video on their cellphones on the track when a locomotive being used to check the track struck them. Srikanth fell into a trench about 20 feet away and managed to escape with minor injuries.

Detained students

Coimbatore Rural Police arrested a class XII student, an ITI student and a class XI student in a clash that took place on Saturday at a school in Alandurai.

Police say the ITI student dropped out of Alandurai Public High School and was teased by the class XI student near a teahouse on the evening of January 5. The boy informed his friend of the incident, a student in class XII of the same school. The class XII student and the ITI student approached the class XI student and his friends near a teahouse in Alandurai on Saturday evening and challenged them to fight.

The students decided to fight in the schoolyard. During the clash, the ITI student assaulted three Class XI students with a knife. The villagers informed police in Alandurai who detained the ITI student and his friend. They were arrested on Saturday evening. The class XI student, who allegedly teased the ITI student, was also arrested. Among the injured, who were admitted to CMCHl, a student was in serious condition, police said.
