West Somerset Railway extends the stay of the 5199 steam locomotive

The West Somerset Railway has extended the deal with Project 5199 and plans to have GWR Prairie stay in Somerset longer than planned.

The new agreement will now see 5199 remain on the West Somerset Railway for the entire 2022 season until December 31, 2022.

A minimum of 50 steam days is part of the deal, with the locomotive being an ideal locomotive for the line, easily towing most trains.

Winter maintenance of the locomotive is currently underway, ready for the start of the new season.

Project 5199 Group Chairman Richard Pumphrey said: “# 5199 will operate on a minimum of 50 steam days during this period. It is an ideal engine for the WSR, capable of easily towing most trains, and many members of the class regularly traveled the steeply sloping branch hauling eight trains during the GWR and British Railways era. The locomotive is currently undergoing a winter mechanical maintenance program at Minehead in anticipation of the new WSR operating season. Our thanks go to Project 5199 for their support of the West Somerset Railway. “
