Yorkshire Wolds Railway calls for restoration of the Fowler locomotive

A new call has been made by the Yorkshire Wolds Railway, based in Driffield, East Yorkshire, to restore a 0-6-0 Fowler locomotive to its former glory.

Patricia, a Fowler 424 shunting locomotive powered by a 6-cylinder Rolls Royce engine, arrived at the Heritage Railway earlier this year after 2.5 years of negotiations.

With the locomotive now in place, the hard work can now begin to get the locomotive back into service at its new home in Fimber Halt.

A new fundraising campaign has been launched, called Fund The Fowler.

Phil Robson, President, told us “This is YWR’s biggest locomotive and as such it will have a big bill to bring it to life – but it will be totally worth it. This will give us the option of running two independent locomotives, or we could pair them together to create quite a spectacle. We have set the fundraising target for the mechanical aspect of the restoration at £ 6,000 and would be happy to receive any donation – large or small – to help us achieve this goal. We hope that in the not too distant future we can move Patricia along our newly expanded platform so that visitors can see the elements of the restoration up close.

Member Graham Danby, who led the operation, said: “By working closely with donors in Hull, we had to make sure everything was on site and with documentation well before a locomotive wheel can move. He has been in his current home for many years and the trails leading to it have required a lot of clearance work to allow him to escape. We were very fortunate and grateful that South Cave Tractors was available to help us. They brought a whole new rail-road Unimog which proved invaluable in getting us out of the locomotive.

Andy Barwick explained: “The locomotive is not in bad shape, but needs to work on all aspects of the mechanical side to get it back to working order. For example, key components such as the air compressor and positioning bracket need to be replaced and we are actively researching these from our small supplier bank. But the first priority will be to re-seal the cabin by installing new windows and gaskets all around ”.
